How to reduce mobile cart abandonment

Mobile cart abandonment is a major challenge for e-commerce merchants. Industry research, including studies from Baymard Institute, regularly finds that a large share of shopping carts are abandoned before checkout is completed. The rate is typically higher on smartphones than on desktop.

There is no single fix, but small improvements can remove obstacles at the moment a customer is ready to buy. Here are the most common causes and the actions worth prioritising.

Why mobile shoppers abandon their carts

  • Unexpected costs: delivery fees, taxes or other charges appear too late in the journey.

  • A difficult checkout: long forms, awkward fields and card details are frustrating on a small screen.

  • Mandatory account creation: customers may not want to create an account before completing a first purchase.

  • Slow pages: loading delays and page refreshes break momentum, especially on a mobile connection.

Five practical ways to improve mobile checkout

1. Make costs clear early

Do not leave delivery costs and taxes until the final step. Give customers a clear estimate from the cart so the checkout does not create an unpleasant surprise.

2. Simplify checkout and offer express payment

Ask only for the information you need. Where appropriate, support wallet payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. A shorter, well-designed checkout is easier to complete on a phone.

3. Offer guest checkout

Let customers place an order without creating an account first. You can invite them to create one after the purchase, when they already have a reason to return.

4. Improve mobile speed

Every second matters. Fast product pages, responsive controls and a stable checkout help the customer stay focused on the purchase rather than on the interface.

5. Remind customers about an unfinished cart

Email can help, but mobile apps add another option: a relevant push notification. A well-timed reminder can bring a customer back to products they were already considering.

How a mobile app can help

A native app does not eliminate abandonment on its own. It can, however, remove some of the friction behind it: customers can stay signed in, return to a persistent cart, reuse a payment method and receive useful cart reminders.

This complements work on your website checkout. If you are comparing formats, see our guide to a mobile app, responsive website and PWA.
